Global frailty: the role of ethnicity, migration and socioeconomic factors

Health care systems internationally are facing the challenges associated with ageing populations. Global projections estimate that by 2050, one in six people will be over the age of 65, numbering around 1.5 billion people [1]. In 2018, over 65 year-olds outnumbered children under the age of five globally for the first time [1]. The United Nations (UN) predicts that in Europe by 2020 the number of people over the age of 85 ( “the oldest old”) will be 40 million, a considerable increase from 14 million in 2012 [2].
