Can You Have A Tubal Reversal With One Kidney?

Surprisingly many patients will have tubal reversal surgery and have only one kidney. This can often be because a patient was born with one kidney or because they have lost or donated a kidney because of medical reasons. Tubal reversal is safe with a single kidney; however, pregnancy is often considered higher risk for preeclampsia and increased blood pressure. Tubal ligation reversal surgery is incredibly safe with one kidney but the main risk is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. Patients can be safely treated by their doctors for ectopic pregnancy with methotrexate medication but this medication is not recommended for women who have one kidney. We recommend careful consultation with a high risk ob gyn and a nephrologist before and after tubal ligation reversal to discuss the risks of pregnancy and how an ectopic will be treated should it occur. We recently published a story about a patient who had successful reversal and pregnancy after having donated a kidney to her partners chronically ill mother.
