5. Serum MicroRNA ’s as Diagnostic Biomarkers of Endometriosis in Adolescent Females

Prevalence of endometriosis in adolescent girls with pelvic pain ranges from 25% to 100%. Despite this high prevalence, diagnosis of endometriosis in adolescent females remains elusive and delayed. Laparoscopy has diagnostic and therapeutic benefits, but major surgery may not be acceptable to these young patients and their caregivers. Search for noninvasive biomarkers is ongoing. Serum microRNA ’s have been shown to have diagnostic value in adult women. This is the first study assessing levels of several microRNA’s in adolescent and young women as potential marker of endometriosis.
