Eosinophilic esophagitis in children is about more than eosinophils

The evolution of disease complexity often exceeds the  simplicity of its original name. For example, regional enteritis (Crohn’s disease) is anything but regional in the GI tract and is associated with a myriad of systemic manifestations. It is measured by numerous determinations, including standardized symptom and endoscopy scores, enterographic imaging, and fecal calprotectin. Gastroesophageal reflux was a disease of heartburn but now is comprehensively assessed by the Los Angeles classification, ambulatory pH/impedance monitoring, and risk stratification tools for Barrett’s esophagus.
