Antibiotic sensitivity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates; a retrospective study from a Saudi tertiary hospital

ConclusionResistance to first-line TB drugs is higher in extra-pulmonary TB isolates than pulmonary isolates. Nearly one-fourth of all M. tuberculosis clinical strains were resistant to the antibiotics tested in mono-resistant or multi-resistant manners. Women had greater resistance to TB drug ethambutol as compared to men. Meanwhile, extra-pulmonary TB specimens, specifically that from tissue cultures, showed greater resistance to Isoniazid than other clinical specimens.

RESULTS: there were four domains: Catalyzing change; Leadership; Planning; and Partnerships. These domains resulted from health education actions, contribution of management nursing practitioners, seeking to meet patients' needs ...

This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics, treatment outcome and risk factors associated with 223 drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) cases in the State of Qatar. A descriptive records-based retrospective study was conducted on patients registered at Communicable Disease Centre (CDC), Qatar to all consecutive microbiologically confirmed tuberculosis cases for the period January 2010 - March 2015. Demographic, clinical data, drug-resistance pattern of isolated mycobacteria and treatment outcome was assessed for the patient who completed their treatment in Qatar. Of 3301 patients with positive M. tuberculosis ...

Male BALB/ с mice were intravenously infected withMycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (0.5 ml of 2-week culture). One month later, treatment with liposome-encapsulated dextrazide (LEDZ, a conjugate of isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH) and 40 kDa oxidized dextran encapsulated in phosphatidylcholine liposomes), INH, or a combination of LEDZ with INH was started. The doses of LEDZ (liposome suspension) and INH were 0.025 ml/10 g body weight and 5 mg/kg body weight, respectively. All the substances were administered 2 times a week via inhalation or intraperitoneally (a total of 40 doses). We studied the number and the size of tu...

Abstract SUMMARYCaseum, the central necrotic material of tuberculous lesions, is a reservoir of drug-recalcitrant persisting mycobacteria. Caseum is found in closed nodules and in open cavities connecting with an airway. Several commonly accepted characteristics of caseum were established during the preantibiotic era, when autopsies of deceased tuberculosis (TB) patients were common but methodologies were limited. These pioneering studies generated concepts such as acidic pH, low oxygen tension, and paucity of nutrients being the drivers of nonreplication and persistence in caseum. Here we review widely accepted b...
