Fecal microbiota transplantation: A promising treatment for radiation enteritis?
Radiation enteritis (RE) is a common complication of abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy. It is usually divided into acute radiation enteritis (ARE) and chronic radiation enteritis (CRE). ARE appears within the first 3 months of radiotherapy (usually self-limited). While CRE, occurs either as a progression from ARE, or after 3 months of radiotherapy completion, and the latency period can be up to more than 20 years. The main symptoms include rectal hemorrhage, cramping pain, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, and b owel obstruction and fistulae formation.
