Direct –to-Consumer Testing: The Role of Laboratory Medicine Physicians and Scientists

We ’ve seen the consumer-driven laboratory testing market grow at an exponential rate as companies offer an increasing number and variety of recreational genetic testing, oncogene panels, mail-in laboratory testing, at-home point-of-care tests, and wearable devices. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing i s marketed to consumers with very different motivations ranging from simple entertainment to the early identification or monitoring of disease. As individuals become increasingly engaged in their own health care, DTC testing represents an extension of our current system with the potential for many b enefits, especially for those without access to traditional medical care or healthcare coverage.
