New targets for blood pressure control have sparked controversy not just because of the increase in the numbers of people defined as hypertensive but also because different interpretations of the same data seemed to have been reached in the UK, Europe and the USA. Authors: Tomiyama H, Shiina K Abstract The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (brachial-ankle PWV), which is measured simply by wrapping pressure cuffs around the four extremities, is a simple marker to assess the stiffness of the medium- to large- sized arteries. The accuracy and reproducibility of its measurement have been confirmed to be acceptable. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease, especially advanced age and high blood pressure, are reported to be associated with an increase of the arterial stiffness. Furthermore, arterial stiffness might be involved in a vicious cycle with the development/progression o...

This is mediated by their production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETS) to entrap pathogenic micro-organisms, preventing their amplification and dissemination. Pre-eclampsia (PE) is the leading cause of global maternal mortality, yet to date, there is no cure nor a gold-standard diagnostic strategy. The purpose of this review is to discover the role of neutrophils in PE as early identification markers. Additionally, this review aims to explore the role o...
