Tongue Discoloration in a Young Girl

A 12-year-old girl presented with an asymptomatic pigmentation on her tongue of 8  months' duration. Examination revealed multiple discrete tan-brown pinhead papules on the anterolateral aspect and tip of the dorsum of her tongue, representing fungiform papillae (Figure, A). There was no other mucocutaneous or systemic involvement. Routine laboratory investigations were unremark able. Dermoscopy (DermLite DL4, polarized mode with 10× magnification; 3Gen, San Juan Capistrano, California) revealed ovoid hyperpigmented projections with dichotomized vessels originating at its base, giving the appearance of “rose petals” (Figure, B).
