As an 8-year-old, I read and enjoyed Kate DiCamillo ’s Flora and Ulysses because it told the story of a squirrel superpowered by an encounter with a vacuum cleaner. But even as I enjoyed this ridiculous and interesting story, I had a sense that there was something I was missing. That encouraged me to come back to it. Rereading the book as a 12-year -old has given me new understanding. On the outside, Flora and Ulysses is about a girl and her squirrel. But if you look closer and read between the lines, you see that the story is more than just a wacky tale of a flying, typing, super squirrel.
