This work reports on the oxidation behavior of MoAl0.97Si0.03B solid solution at temperatures from 1200 °C to 1400 °C in air for 10 h. The MoAl0.97Si0.03B solid solution exhibited improved oxidation resistance as compared with MoAlB. In the oxidation temperature range, the mass gain and the scale thickness of MoAl0.97Si0.03B are lower than those of MoAlB, indicating the slow oxidation rate of the former. The microstructure and the phase composition of the oxidized samples were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis. The formed dense Al2O3 scale and the SiO2 glassy phase contribute to the improved oxidation resistance of MoAl0.97Si0.03B.
