Frequency and clinical presentation of alveolar and cystic echinococcosis in a tertiary medical center in Germany 2004-2018: lessons from a low-prevalence area.

CONCLUSIONS: AE and CE are rare diseases in the greater Leipzig region; however, case numbers are on the rise. Due to favorable factors such as the escalation of migration, a further increase is expected. Diagnosis and therapy are challenging and should be supported by specialists (experienced infectiologists, imaging experts and skilled hepatobiliary surgeons) who should be integrated in a German network.
