Outcome prediction in primary hyperparathyroidism

For 30 years baseline serum calcium concentration has been the primary surgical selection criteria for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Yu and colleagues have previously demonstrated that PHPT patients with mild hypercalcaemia are also at increased risk of adverse complications. They now go on to demonstrate that baseline parathyroid hormone at the time of diagnosis best predicts long-term outcomes in untreated PHPT.
