Effects of red clover (Trifolium pratense) isoflavones on the lipid profile of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women - a systematic review and meta-analysis

The menopause, which is the end of the reproductive period in a woman's life, induces a number of physiological changes that permanently affect her further life. The hormonal changes, low plasma levels of oestrogen, and a marked increase in follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone [1,2] during the menopausal transition exert a significant effect on plasma lipids and lipoproteins. In addition to the effect of menopause, aging in post-menopausal women is associated with lipid modifications towards atherosclerosis [3 –5].
