John Fryer Award

John Fryer Award The John Fryer Award honors an individual whose work has contributed to the improvement of the mental health of sexual minorities. The award is named after Dr. John Fryer, a gay psychiatrist who played a crucial role in prompting the American Psychiatric Association to review the scientific data and to remove homosexuality from the APA’s diagnostic list of mental disorders in 1973. Prize The award recipient receives a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium upon presentation of the award lecture at the APA Annual Meeting or the Institute on Psychiatric Services. Eligibility: Open Submission Requirements A nomination consists of a letter summarizing how and why the nominee is deserving of the award, a one-page biographical sketch of the nominee, and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Deadline: June 1 Selection Selection is made by a work group of the APA Council on Minority Mental Health and Mental Health Disparities consisting of a representative from the Council, officers of the Caucus of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Psychiatrists, and representatives from the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists.
