It's Time to Get Serious about Pediatric Readiness

Mismatches between needs and resources abound in health care. There is no greater example than the mismatch between the huge volume of pediatric emergency visits and the paucity of facilities fully prepared to provide such care. Although 34 million emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric illness or injury occur annually, two-thirds of children live more than 30  minutes from the most prepared hospitals.1,2 Children and their families should be able to rely on the nearest ED to be ready to provide outstanding care for their emergencies, but it is unclear how to encourage hospitals to improve their own pediatric readiness.
