Unusual case of papillary thyroid carcinoma mimicking paraganglioma in a 16-year-old girl

ConclusionThyroid paraganglioma is a rare type of tumor, it arises from inferior laryngeal paraganglioma within thyroid capsule and is as thus difficult to distinguish from thyroid carcinomas. A biopsy is the best diagnostic choice but immunohistochemistry is the only investigation which is considered as the gold standard for distinguishing between these two diseases.

Authors: Guo L, Chen B, Zhang L, Deng Y, Li H, Shi QD Abstract A 49-year-old female patient developed chest tightness and shortness of breath without apparent cause and presented to a local hospital. Chest radiography indicated increased thickening of the lung texture, increased multiple patchy densities in the lower lobes of the bilateral lungs and a slightly enlarged thyroid. The patient was treated for pulmonary infection with antibiotics but the symptoms persisted. A repeated CT scan revealed ground-glass attenuation of the bilateral lungs with multiple flaky exudates and visible bronchogenic signs. The symptom...

Conclusions: Choosing the type of approach is related to surgeon experience, although 79-94% of the surgeons prefer the transabdominal lateral approach. We believe that with an experienced surgical team, there is no difficulty in performing adrenalectomy by transabdominal approach, with no significantly prolonged operating time, even though the patient has previously had abdominal surgery. In this study, we constructed a PEG-MnO2-OPN siRNA nanocomplex via a modular streptavidin bridge for the theranostic treatment of renal carcinoma in vitro and in vivo. This strategy of utilizing PEG-MnO2 nanosheets for OPN siRNA delivery showed effective tumor growth inhibition of 786-O tumor-bearing mice, and such a process could be monitored by the activated T1-weight MRI, illustrating the promising potential of PEG-MnO2 nanosheets for the fabrication of an MRI-based theranostic system.

Authors: Qin H, Wen DY, Que Q, Zhou CY, Wang XD, Peng YT, He Y, Yang H, Liao BM Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally considered one of the most common gastrointestinal malignant tumors, characterized by high invasiveness and metastatic rate, as well as insidious onset. A relationship between carcinogenicity and aberrant microRNA-139-5p (miR-139-5p) expression has been identified in multiple tumors while the specific molecular mechanisms of miR-139-5p in HCC have not yet been thoroughly elucidated. A meta-analysis of available data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus, ArrayEx...

Authors: Anqi C, Takabatake K, Kawai H, Oo MW, Yoshida S, Fujii M, Omori H, Sukegawa S, Nakano K, Tsujigiwa H, Jinhua Z, Nagatsuka H Abstract The stroma affects the properties and dynamics of the tumor. Previous studies have demonstrated that bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) possess the capability of differentiating into stromal cells. However, the characteristics and roles of BMDCs in oral squamous cell carcinoma remain unclear. The current study therefore investigated their locations and features by tracing green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled BMDCs in a transplantation mouse model. After irradiation, BALB-c ...

Authors: Zhang H, Wang R, Wang M Abstract Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is a common tumor of the digestive system with poor prognosis. Studies have shown that aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expression can affect CRC progression by regulating target genes. In the present study, we investigated the functional roles and potential mechanisms of miR-331-3p in CRC. The expression of miR-331-3p and neuropilin-2 (NRP2) in CRC was detected by RT-qPCR. Then, Transwell assays were conducted to investigate the influence of miR-331-3p on CRC cell invasion and migration abilities. Luciferase reporter assays were performed to determine t...

Authors: Takeuchi N, Koike K, Yoshida S, Fujiwara M Abstract Recent therapeutic advancements have prolonged the survival duration of patients with metastatic or recurrent colorectal cancer even during salvage treatment. Although treatment with regorafenib and trifluridine/tipiracil combination has exhibited apparent survival benefits, clear and objective evidence of a response to these drugs is scarce. Herein, the present study reports the case of a patient with rectal cancer refractory to multiple surgical interventions and standard chemotherapy. Treatment with regorafenib resulted in immediate improvement of resp...

Authors: Zou J, Li C, Chen Y, Chen R, Xue T, Xie X, Zhang L, Ren Z Abstract Spontaneous rupture is one of the complications of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with a high mortality rate. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been widely used in patients with ruptured liver tumors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the benefits and safety of conventional TACE and the disease prognosis following TACE and surgery with regard to the progression of spontaneously ruptured HCC. The clinical data of 70 patients diagnosed with spontaneous rupture of HCC were retrospectively reviewed. The m...

Authors: Zhang C, Wang N, Su X, Li K, Yu D, Ouyang A Abstract The aim of the present study was to examine the value of FORCE dual-energy CT in grading the clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). A total of 35 cases of ccRCC were included. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed, and the cases were divided into low- (Fuhrman I-II) and high-grade (Fuhrman III-IV) groups. FORCE dual-energy CT parameters, including virtual network computing CT value (VNCV), iodine overlay value (IOV), mixed energy CT value (MEV), iodine concentration (IC), normalized iodine concentration (NIC), NIC based on aorta (NICA), NIC base...
