Interior Design, Color, and Mental Health

Psychologists are interviewed about interior design and color in a CBS News report, Color Me Happy. Toby Israel believes our homes should be filled with things that have positive associations for us (like a log in her kitchen) because it makes us happier. Psychoanalyst Mark Gerald shows off his office and says that interior design is a reflection of our inner life, and can affect therapy sessions. He’s also a photographer who’s taken pictures of dozens of therapists’ offices, and discovered some use design intentionally to influence therapy. As well, the report discusses the psychology of colors, from blue that stimulates creativity, to soothing “drunk tank pink” – a specific shade of pink used in prisons and other institutions that research shows has an effect on aggressive men that calms and literally weakens them.
