Minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of hyperacusis: New technique and long term results

ConclusionsThe most recent, newer technique employed appears to have an 80% success rate in improving sound tolerance with small changes to hearing. The improvement in hyperacusis symptoms after surgery is significant and now found to be sustainable with a mean follow-up of 2 years after initial surgery. Psychological measures of anxiety and depression also were found to be significantly improved after surgery in the newer technique group.

Conclusions: Similar to previous studies, our results suggest that patients suffering from CLBP differ with regard to the magnitude of mental burden and the presence of physical impairment. These differences ascertain the need for precise targeting of treatment for CLBP. Inpatient pain centers therefore should offer different multimodal therapy pathways and integrate a meaningful triage, taking into account the multifaceted nature of CLBP based on sophisticated knowledge about forms, differences, and relationships among the biopsychosocial components of CLBP. This study examined the relationship between parental uncertainty and parent proxy reports of HRQOL in newly diagnosed children with cancer. METHODS: A longitudinal descriptive approach was used to examine the relationship between parental uncertainty and parent proxy reports of HRQOL in 55 parent-child dyads. Parental trait anxiety, depression, and perceived social support were evaluated as potential predictor variables. FINDINGS: Parents of newly diagnosed children with cancer reported lower parent proxy HRQOL scores. Parental uncertainty was prevalent and affected parents' perceptions of HRQOL three months fol...

In conclusion, morphine administration during adolescence induced persistent changes in negative affect and brain toxicity selectively in male rats, suggesting female rats were resilient to these harmful effects. Given the widespread availability and use of opiate-based painkillers, the interplay between addiction, analgesia and emotional behaviors, and since adolescents and young adult humans are the age group with the highest abuse potential, these results add to the current literature by reporting distinct sex-specific opioid actions when administered in adolescence.

egi A Abstract BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors can experience psychological distress, such as anxiety and depression, long after treatment has ended, and the development of such negative affective states has been related to the coping strategy used. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aims to determine whether different coping strategies are associated with differences in psychological distress, cortisol, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) levels in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: 54 breast cancer survivors completed the Stress Coping Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and pr...

ConclusionPLO has a significant impact on pain, mental state, quality of life, and capacity to work. However, the long-term prognosis is promising. The severe mental distress is presumably related to several contributing factors in life such as physical integrity and independence, family life, employment, and financial security.Key Points• PLO has a strong impact on quality of life and can lead to severe mental distress.• At onset of symptoms, patients with PLO are in very poor mental and physical condition; however, the long-term outcome after inpatient rehabilitation seems to be good.• Most patients do not...

However, patients treated with this and other antiepileptic drugs often exhibit aggressive behaviors. We investigated the clinical factors contributing to aggression in patients with refractory focal epilepsy during 6 months of adjunctive perampanel treatment.MethodsThis was a single-center longitudinal study involving patients treated with perampanel (starting dose, 2 mg/day; maximal dose, 12...

CONCLUSIONS: Syrian refugees hardly access MHPSS services despite high mental health needs, and despite formally having access to the public mental health system in Turkey. To overcome the treatment gap, MHPSS programmes need to be implemented in the community and need to overcome the barriers to seeking care which were identified in this study. Mental health awareness raising activities should be provided in the community alongside the delivery of psychological interventions. This is to increase help-seeking and to tackle negative attitudes towards mental health and people with mental health problems. PMID: 31727205 [...

ConclusionsAlthough, based on the current literature, differential cognitive biases may not be a marker for MDD in ASD, more research is needed taking specific potential confounders, and distorting influences into account.

Conclusions: In general, abuse was associated with worse mental health and more severe criminal justice involvement. Women reported much greater rates of abuse and our results provide some support for the idea that a history of abuse may be an important precursor to criminal justice involvement for individuals under community corrections supervision.
