AbstractSince introducing optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology for 2D eye imaging, it has become one of the most important and widely used imaging modalities for the noninvasive assessment of retinal eye diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema eye disease are the leading causes of blindness being diagnosed using OCT. Recently, by developing machine learning and deep learning techniques, the classification of eye retina diseases using OCT images has become quite a challenge. In this paper, a novel automated convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for a multiclass classifi...

This study aimed to measure alterations of chemical elements’ (67) levels in the aqueous humor of patients undergoing cataract surgery. The pilot study included 115 patients, (age 74 ± 7.27, female 64.35%, male 35.65%). The aqueous levels of elements were measured by the use of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), quality controlled with certified standards. The classification of elements based on their concentration was achieved by hierarchical cluster analysis. This is the first screening study that quantifies over 60 elements which are present in the fluid from the...

Researchers from Bonn University in Germany said ageing populations meant 15 per cent more people across Europe would suffer from age-related macular degeneration in 30 years' time.

CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 67 million people in the EU are currently affected by any AMD and, due to population ageing, this number is expected to increase by 15% until 2050. Monitoring and treatment of people with advanced disease stages will require additional healthcare resources and thorough healthcare planning in the years and decades to come. Conclusions: In fetal RPE cells, Gremlin-1 induces EMT and inhibits redifferentiation by promoting the TGF-β pathway and inhibiting the BMP pathway. GREM1 silencing alleviates EMT and increases the redifferentiation of cells by relieving the blockade of the BMP pathway. However, GREM1 silencing has no effects on the TGF-β pathway. Thus, Gremlin-1 may serve as a novel target to treat proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and inhibit subretinal fibrosis, which is a risk factor for influencing the therapeutic effects of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) on neovascular age-related macular degenerati...

Conclusion. One dose + PRN showed noninferior visual gains than 3 loading doses + PRN regimen using ranibizumab in Chinese nvAMD and PCV patients. Number of injections in the PRN group was similar as that in the LD group but remained a potential risk of vision instability during one-year follow-up using OCT-guided retreatment criteria. This trial is registered with NCT02810808. PMID: 31687203 [PubMed]

Conclusions: FCE are relatively frequently encountered morphologic features of elderly patients with ARMD, high myopia, and ARCA, and have a distinct clinical and imaging morphology which differs from classically described chorioretinal folds. The lesions may commonly be mistaken for pigment epithelial detachments on ophthalmoscopy, may be associated with CNV in fellow eyes, and have a characteristic SD-OCT appearance. Conclusion: This study illuminates the low utilization of eye care among socioeconomically disadvantaged older adults residing in SSH, especially among those with vision impairment and eye disease. Vision-related health care is important in maintaining both physical and mental health in older adults. PMID: 31694391 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
