Coming alongside our patients: a practical introduction to motivational interviewing and health behavior change counseling

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, evidence-based, person-centered counseling style for addressing ambivalence about change by paying attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual ’s motivation for and movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. MI has proven to be efficacious in several behavioral health fields, including interventions with adolescents, and can be well i ntegrated with other treatment modalities.
