Complex presentations of asd: beyond the core features

Many youth with ASD have complex presentations characterized by co-occurring signs of mental illness and symptoms beyond the disorder ’s core features of impaired social communication and restricted/repetitive behavior. However, diagnostic overshadowing and the often-limited specificity of behavioral symptoms can make these co-occurring phenomena difficult for clinicians to accurately identify and appropriately address. The chal lenge may be particularly significant with psychosis, catatonia, sleep disruption, and food selectivity, all of which are relatively common yet underresearched in the ASD population.
