In an Urban Food Desert, Farmers Markets Make a Mobile Oasis

The USDA late last year awarded a $61,160 grant to the Five Points Community Farm Market for their idea to establish a mobile farmers market in Ballentine, as well as three other food-challenged neighborhoods in Sherwood Forest, Ingleside and Lamberts Point. This year, the organization began delivering produce to those communities in an effort to improve residents’ access to fresh foods. Organizers arrive weekly in a cargo van, set up a tent in parking lots and open spaces, then stock crates with greens, turnips and potatoes — all available for purchase with cash, credit or food stamps.
