Accessory Left Gastric Artery Arising from Inferior Phrenic Artery: Angiographic Findings in 5 Patients

Recent studies published in this journal and elsewhere (1,2) have shown promising data on the therapeutic potential of left gastric artery (LGA) embolization for the treatment of obesity and its associated comorbidities. Ischemia of the gastric fundus, which plays an important role in the hormonal regulation of appetite, is thought to be the primary mechanism underlying the effects of bariatric embolization (3). Therefore, a thorough understanding of gastric arterial anatomy, including variant anatomy, is important, as embolization of any accessory vessels supplying the gastric fundus may have potential benefit in optimizing procedural efficacy.
