In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the response to neoadjuvant/perioperative chemotherapy correlates with the expression of four different putative cancer stem cell markers of gastric cancer (GC), i.e., LGR5, FZD7, TROY, and MIST1. The expression of LGR5, FZD7, TROY, and MIST1 was assessed by immunohistochemistry in 119 perioperatively treated GCs including pretherapeutic biopsies, resected primary GCs, and corresponding nodal and distant metastases. All four markers were detected in our cohort with variable prevalence and histoanatomical distributions. Few tumor cells expressed TROY. LGR5, FZD7, and MIST1 were c...

Authors: Reck M, Shankar G, Lee A, Coleman S, McCleland M, Papadimitrakopoulou VA, Socinski MA, Sandler A Abstract Introduction: Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, specific patient groups (e.g. patients with activating epidermal growth factor receptor [EGFR] mutations) do not appear to derive benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapy. Combining ICIs, such as atezolizumab, with chemotherapy and/or targeted therapies may help to address this unmet need.Areas covered: Atezolizumab is an anti-program...

ConclusionsNeoadjuvant radiotherapy is associated with a worse wound healing of the anastomosis after sleeve lobectomy in lung cancer. There seems to be a higher risk of anastomotic insufficiency and complications.

Conclusion: A routine ophthalmic follow-up is recommended for all patients with established or suspected amyloidosis, independent of the biochemical type of the amyloid. Close collaboration between the ophthalmologist and the internist will facilitate a more precise diagnosis of ocular involvement in amyloidosis and allow the multidisciplinary management of these patients.Abbreviations: CD: corneal dystrophy; CLA: corneal lattice amyloidosis; CNS: central nervous system; CT: computed tomography; FAP: familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy; GDLCD: gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy; GLN: gelsolin; LCD: lattice corneal dyst...

Brain metastasis is a rare and generally late manifestation of an advanced-stage, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma. Nowadays, the improved control of intra-abdominal disease by surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy results in a longer survival, allowing distant metastasis to implant and grow in the brain parenchyma. Herein, we describe a unique case of a cerebellar metastasis from clear cell ovarian carcinoma that initially presented as a FIGO Stage IC cancer. Surprisingly, 6 mo after surgery, the patient was in good condition with complete disappearance of symptoms and no evidence of recurrence. This relativel...

We present a case of ovarian lymphoma, in which an ambiguous intraoperative pathologic report led to overtreatment (unnecessary surgery). A 73-yr-old woman with fatigue and low-grade fever was diagnosed as having a left ovarian tumor by imaging modalities. Exploratory laparotomy was carried out to confirm the diagnosis. The frozen tissue sections of the ovarian tumor showed condensed proliferation of atypical round cells accompanied with a few small lymphocytes. The pathologists could not determine whether this tumor was a lymphoma or another malignancy (eg, dysgerminoma). Hence, they reported it to gynecologists who opera...
