Space Oddity

‘Space Oddity’ tells the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who is launched into space. The song begins with ground control talking to Major Tom who is waiting to launch while a countdown proceeds in the background. Following successful blast off, ground control congratulate Major Tom who has ‘really made the grade’ and then ask him to leave his capsule if he dares. Something goes wrong and Major Tom says goodbye to his wife. Ground control repeatedly ask if Major Tom can hear them and the song finishes after Major Tom sings ‘For here am I floating round my tin can, far above the moon, planet earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do’. In the 1972 official video, Bowie appears as Ziggy Stardust, a persona he adopted from 1972 [1].
