Increased mortality in elderly patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis

Elderly patients are commonly associated with a greater comorbidity burden and complication rate than nonelderly patients. Comorbidities and hospital-related complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) in elderly patients were evaluated. A retrospective analysis of patient cases found in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was performed. Patients with a primary diagnosis of SJS/TEN made from 2003-2012 were included. Differences in hospital complications and comorbidities were assessed between elderly ( ≥65 years) and nonelderly patients.
