ZIKV infection results in an increased risk of spontaneous abortion and poor intrauterine growth although the mechanisms underlying fetal loss remain undetermined. Little is known about the impact of ZIKV infection during the earliest stages of pregnancy, or pre- and peri-implantation, because most current studies of Z...

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is associated with microcephaly, a congenital malformation resulting from neuroinflammation and direct effects of virus replication on the developing central nervous system (CNS). However, the exact changes in the affected CNS remain unknown. Here, we show by transcriptome analysis (at 48 hours post-infection) and multiplex immune profiling that human induced-neuroprogenitor stem cells (hiNPCs) respond to ZIKV infection with a strong induction of type I interferons (IFNs) and several type I IFNs stimulated genes (ISGs), notably cytokines and the pro-apoptotic chemokines CXCL9 an...

ard Hildt Infection with Zika virus (ZIKV) came first to public attention after it was found to be associated with congenital microcephaly during the outbreak in Brazil (2015–2016). Diagnosis of ZIKV suffers from extensive cross-reactivity with other Flaviviruses, which are circulating in many ZIKV epidemic areas. Due to the fatal outcome of ZIKV infection during pregnancy, detailed knowledge about neutralizing and non-neutralizing epitopes is crucial for the development of robust detection systems of protective antibodies. Therefore, additional information about ZIKV immunogenicity and antibody response is requi...

During the 2015-16 Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak in Brazil, hospital surveillance for congenital Zika infection (CZI) was conducted at the Jos é Maria de Magalhães Neto reference maternity hospital, located in Salvador-Brazil, between February and December 20161. Normocephalic infants with prenatal exposure to ZIKV were recruited if their serological testing or a polymerase-chain-reaction assay (PCR) for ZIKV were positive. All their mot hers reported ZIKV infection symptoms during pregnancy and had anti-ZIKV IgG positivity at the time of delivery.

Until recently, Zika virus (ZIKV) infections were considered mild and self-limiting. Since 2015, they have been associated with an increase in microcephaly and other birth defects in newborns. While this assoc...

CONCLUSION: Although the knowledge of the natural evolution of the disease is still scarce, the current evidence is strong enough to establish a causal relationship between ZIKV infection during pregnancy and the increased incidence of the microcephaly and serious eye alterations that lead to the severe lower vision of these children.RESUMO: INTRODU ÇÃO: O vírus Zika (ZIKV) é um arbovírus isolado pela primeira vez no ano de 1947, sendo transmitido para o homem pelo mosquito Aedes aegypti. No Brasil foi detectado pela primeira vez em maio de 2015. Desde então, ZIKV foi identificado ...

In conclusion, SIAT is still evolving, as is the Medical Genetics Service that hosts it. Through its 27 years of existence more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students have rotated at SIAT. Presently, SIAT is expanding the research to experimental teratogenesis and to investigation of molecular mechanisms of teratogens.

This study aimed to address this issue in a sample of Jordanian and non-Jordanian travelers to U.S. in Jordan. A paper-based questionnaire was distributed to 301 travelers to U.S. in Queen Alia International airport, Amman, Jordan. Only 2.7% of the travelers knew that Zika is associated with birth defects. A total of 10.4% of the participants knew that the bite of infected mosquitoes is a route of Zika transmission. Only 12.6% of respondents correctly identified Zika prevention measures. The level of education and future plans for pregnancy were significantly associated with a high knowledge score (R2 = 0.140, p-value &...
