The ZrO2 NPs-chitosan/PEDOT/ITO electrode was employed as a disposal electrochemical sensor for methyl parathion (MP) detection. The structure characteristics, adsorption characteristics and electrochemical features of electrode were characterized by the SEM, XRD, UV–vis spectrometer and electrochemical analysis techniques. Combined with the individual properties of PEDOT (conductivity and electrocatalysis) and ZrO2 NPs (affinity to MP), the ZrO2 NPs-chitosan/PEDOT/ITO electrode displayed superior electrochemical performances to MP measurement with a limit of detection of 2.8 ng·ml−1 (S/N = 3) and a linear range of 5–2000 ng·ml−1. Furthermore, this sensor exhibited acceptable selectivity and reproducibility. The result of this sensor in real sample measure to MP detection also demonstrates precision.Graphical abstract
