Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic disease that causes people to slowly lose their eyesight as time goes on and eventually become blind. This causes the cells in the eye that receive and transmit light information to die over time. However, the rest of the eye's visual functions are intact. So there are a lot of researchers working to restore vision in these patients by developing an artificial implant that can take the place of those lost cells.
