The first year.

Poetry representing research data can be a powerful tool to further empathy and understanding of participants’ stories (Furman, Lietz, & Langer, 2006). This poem represents a semi-structured interview, with portions transcribed to embody utterances, tone, and phrasing in the poem’s form. The transcription has been rearranged to produce a holistic and focused story. A combination of Poindexter’s (2002) and Gee’s (1991) linguistic approaches and work inspired the construction of this poem. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
