Commentary to “Distribution of a photographic atlas did not reduce postoperative care utilization following pediatric circumcision; or, the indispensability of the pediatric urology clinic nurse”

They found that the majority of concerns were unrelated to penile appearance and concluded that the atlas did not significantly reduce the need for postoperative urologic nursing calls or resource utilization [1].

Prior studies have suggested the distribution of a photographic atlas can mitigate caregiver anxiety and reduce clinic phone calls and in-person presentations following pediatric penile surgery.

Conclusions/Implications for Practice: In the current clinical environment of common staffing shortages, information tools may be used to cost-effectively assist and simplify nursing work. The findings of this study may provide a reference to medical centers that are working to reduce the time spent by nurses on health education for outpatient surgery patients. Furthermore, audiovisual health education tools are recommended to increase nursing effectiveness and save nursing time.
