We studied virus-inhibiting activity of Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) flavonoids against tick-borne encephalitis virus using various model schemes. The half-maximum cytotoxic concentration (CC50) for the plant extract was found (363.9 ±58.6 μg/ml). Based on the CC50 and IC50, selective index (SI) was calculated for viricidal (53.4), preventive (50.5), and direct antiviral actions (39.1) and for-intracellular replication of the virus (40.4). Suppression of virus reproduction ≥2.0 lg TCID50 was observed at extract concentration ≥5 μg/ml (viricidal effect), ≥11.2 μg/ml (preventive and dire...

Authors: Suzuki T, Tetsuka S, Ogawa T, Hashimoto R, Okada S, Kato H Abstract VZV encephalitis in the absence of vasculopathy may rarely occur in association with herpes zoster. We herein report the case of a 67-year-old woman with non-Hodgkin' s lymphoma undergoing chemotherapy who presented with an acute alteration in consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed multiple and nonspecific lesions of hyperintensity with mild edema in the cortex and subcortex. She was treated with intravenous acyclovir. However, two days after admission, the patient died and was diagnosed with VZV encephalitis. This...

Abstract We investigated the expression of A disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type I repeats-13 (ADAMTS-13) in the central nervous system (CNS), because it is related to blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. We also investigated 8-OHdG, caspase-3 and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) expression for the cytotoxic effects of oxidative stress (OS) and nNOS, and their relation to apoptosis. We also investigated the neuroimmunopathology caused by L. monocytogenes. Brain tissues were obtained from 10 lambs and 10 kids with listeric meningoencephalitis, and healthy brain tissue from six lambs and...
