Transition in endocrinology

Two articles in the January issue of Clinical Endocrinology tackle the issue of transition care. Gleeson and colleagues, in their single-centre study, evaluated whether young people with congenital adrenal hyperplasia have been successfully transitioned from paediatric care to specialist adult services, finding that in half of cases were lost to follow-up on transfer to adult services. Downing and colleagues made a similar evaluation across a wider range of endocrine conditions, covering services from Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria. They found that a quarter of paediatric patients did not attend the Young Person’s Clinic (YPC) in the first year of transfer. The YPC service was established, in part, to facilitate transitional care. Read the full articles in Clinical Endocrinology (2013) 78, pages 23–28 and 29–35.
