Effectiveness of Bilateral Clipping of the Thoracic Sympathetic Chain for the Treatment of Severe Palmar and/or Axillary Hyperhidrosis and Facial Flushing

ConclusionsClipping of the thoracic sympathetic chain is an effective and safe procedure. If incapacitating compensatory sweating develops, this technique allows the clips to be removed with reversion of symptoms in a considerable number of patients.

Authors: Morinaga Y, Nii K, Sakamoto K, Inoue R, Mitsutake T, Hanada H Abstract Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a clinical condition characterized by abnormal paroxysmal surges in sympathetic nervous system activity. PSH is known to occur after severe head injury and hypoxic encephalopathy. Cases of PSH that develop after stroke have been reported worldwide; however, PSH is not commonly reported in the field of stroke research in Japan. Some studies have suggested that gabapentin may improve the symptoms of PSH. To our knowledge, this is the first case report demonstrating the efficacy of trazodone fo...

Based on their common etiology and molecular background, the hypothesis on the potential anti-cancer activity of cardiological drugs appeared, mainly in response to the necessity of increasing the efficacy of existing oncological treatment schemes. In fact, cancer is known to induce the profound malfunction of typic...

Conclusions: although the small number of patients and the wide range of disease severity among patients reduced statistical significance, we obtained an optimal profile of safety and tolerability for the compound, showing valuable data of efficacy in primary and secondary endpoints.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most common inherited myopathic disorders, with an estimated prevalence of 1:15,000 –1:20,000 [1–3]. Recent studies have advanced our knowledge about the pathophysiology behind FSHD [4,5] and as a result, exciting therapeutic strategies to effectively treat FSHD are now being developed [6]. However, in light of the substantial effort to develop meaningful treatments, FSHD clini cal trials encounter major challenges including: (1) the establishment and maintenance of patient registries based on globally accepted datasets; (2) development and validation ...
