Abstract Cystoscopy and histology are the gold standards for detection of bladder cancer. However, these methods are highly subjective, expensive, and invasive. We have developed a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of bladder cancer by detecting telomerase activity in human urine. Telomerase substrate (TS) primer is elongated with repeating sequences of (TTAGGG)n in the presence of telomerase. The elongated primer can trigger hybridization chain reaction between two hairpins H1 and H2, result in the aggregation of AuNPs due to the hybridization between the tail sequence on H1 (or H2) and DNA-AuNPs probe, and a...

Galectins in prostate and bladder cancer: tumorigenic roles and clinical opportunities, Published online: 23 April 2019; doi:10.1038/s41585-019-0183-5Galectins have established roles in cancer, but their function in genitourinary cancer is unclear. In this Opinion, the authors discuss the emerging roles of galectins in prostate and bladder cancer development and progression and speculate regarding opportunities for clinical translation.

ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that UCSD in BCa was associated not only with unfavorable clinicopathological features, but also with high risk of recurrence and poorer prognosis for DFS. However, UCSD is not independently significant for CSS and OS. Well-designed randomized study with larger sample size is warranted to verify the findings and to further explore the role of UCSD in BCa.

Self-renewing somatic tissues rely on the proper regulation of epigenetic information through the precise control of gene enhancer and transcriptional networks in order to establish and maintain cell fate and identity. Disruption of these pathways critical for differentiation can lead to a loss of proliferative control, ultimately driving carcinogenesis. In line with this, the genes encoding the chromatin modifiers and master enhancer regulators MLL3 (KMT2C) and MLL4 (KMT2D) are amongst the most frequently mutated genes in all of human cancer, with a particularly high prevalence in self-renewing somatic epithelial tissues ...

ConclusionssLAD leads to higher lymph-node yield and N2/N3 rate but not to higher complication rate compared to lLAD and eLAD. With the advent of novel adjuvant systemic therapies, precise nodal staging will have a crucial role in patients counseling and clinical decision making.

CONCLUSION: Serum PSA level of 0.2 ng/mL as the definition for biochemical recurrence after RP may delay salvage treatment. Our results showed that cut off value of ?0.1 ng/mL may be more precise in the era of early salvage treatment. PMID: 31004342 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study provides mechanistic insights into the potential role(s) of autophagy in BPV disease, which can help to develop future treatment and control measures for BPV infection. Activation of autophagy correlates positively with BPV infection and may play a role in biological behavior of bladder cancer as urothelial carcinomas of cattle are known to be characterized by a relatively low rate of metastasis.
