23. Safety and Outcomes of Intrauterine Device Utilization in Adolescents With Cognitive Delays

Adolescent females with cognitive delays (CD) experience unique physical and emotional challenges related to menstruation. Providers often recommend hormonal medication for menstrual management which can treat heavy periods, dysmenorrhea, and provide contraception. It also helps address hygiene concerns and behavioral changes related to menstrual blood. The safety of intrauterine devices (IUDs) in adolescents has been well described; however, data on IUD utilization and safety in patients with CD is more limited.
