The International Dimension of Microplastic Pollution: G7 Scientific Advice Cooperation - 13 February 2019, Washington DC

On 13th February 2019 in Washington DC, the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors will co-host with Canada’s Chief Science Advisor and France’s G7 Presidency a round-table discussion among Chief Scientific Advisors or their equivalents from G7 members on “What meaningful and robust scientific advice to government is possible on microplastic pollution based on the current scientific evidence base?” What started as a bilateral cooperation between the European Commission’s and Canada’s chief science advisors, resulted in this round-table proposal being endorsed at the G7 Joint Ministerial on healthy oceans, seas and resilient communities on 20 Sept 2018 last in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The expected participation of two Commission Directors-General (Jean-Eric Paquet DG RTD and Daniel Calleja Crespo DG ENV), reflects the high importance the Commission accords to the problem of microplastics pollution and is consistent with the exemplary world-leading role which the EU plastics startegy is playing. he meeting is expected to result in a Consensus Statement by the Chief Scientific Advisors or their equivalents.
