Comment on: “Factors associated with bariatric surgery utilization among eligible candidates: who drops out?”

I read with interest a recent article written by Alvarez, et al [1]. The authors conducted a retrospective study at a university hospital to determine factors associated with dropout among patients who were eligible for bariatric surgery. The authors concluded that dropout was independently associated with certain comorbidities, including hypertension and coronary artery disease; type of insurance; and program-specific requirements, including medical clearance and a psychological evaluation. Although this study addressed an important issue among potential bariatric surgery patients, I have some questions and concerns about the methodologic strength of this study and its applicability to other clinical settings.
