Obesity is recognized as a global epidemic due to its continually increasing incidence [1]. In the last two decades, the worldwide prevalence of obesity has more than doubled, including 35% of the US population [1]. The mainstay of treatment for morbid obesity has become bariatric surgery; its efficacy in achieving substantial weight loss and improving obesity-related comorbidities has been well established [2].
