Increasing the participation of medical students in surgical research: The Italian case and the role of research collaboratives

Research collaboratives represent an innovative and effective platform to deliver multicentric prospective studies that impact clinical practice. Over the past 10 years, student- and trainee-led surgical research collaboratives have flourished in the UK and allowed the completion of high-quality multicentre studies, with rapid recruitment of large numbers of patients [1]. Following this model, the first pan-European student- and trainee-led surgical research collaborative (EuroSurg) was established in 2015.
