Achieving Joint Commission Regulatory Compliance: Quality Improvement Process for CT Protocol Review and Dose Alert Reduction

Radiation from CT constitutes a large component of annual population exposure and has created national focus on monitoring and reducing radiation dose due to CT [1,2]. Despite increased awareness of CT exposure, considerable variability continues to exist in radiation doses within the same health system and across institutions [3,4]. The Joint Commission now requires that accredited institutions track dose indices for all CT examinations. In addition, institutions are required to perform regular protocol review and  analyze CT examinations when the radiation dose index exceeds a predetermined threshold [5].
