One step forward for evidence-based therapy for learning problems in preterm children
Executive functions, such as working memory, emerge during childhood. Premature children are at risk for impaired executive function; this often becomes apparent at school age or adolescence when learning and behavior are compromised (Semin Perinatol 2016; 40:520-9). Therapy for working memory may be recommended but this may cause a dilemma for parents and pediatricians as the evidence basis for specific types of training often are lacking and this is not likely to be covered by insurance.
