Expanded Health Care Coverage for Young Adults on Parental Plans Leads to Confidentiality Concerns and Forgone Care

Among the provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) that expanded health insurance coverage; extending the age in which a dependent child could be covered under their parent's private health insurance plan up to age 26, regardless of student status, dramatically increased the proportion of insured young adults [1]. Expanding health insurance coverage for this population plays a critical role in increasing their access to health care services; yet, adolescents and young adults (AYAs) face additional barriers to care that need to be examined and address in order to ensure that they are fully able to access to care.
