The Association of IVC Filter Placement with the Incidence of Postoperative Pulmonary Embolism following Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery: An Analysis of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Project
Obesity is endemic in the United States effecting 39.6% of the population and approximately 200,000 undergo bariatric surgery annually.[1-6] Despite an overall decrease in the rate of adverse events following bariatric surgery, these procedures are not without risk.[6] Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), are among the leading cause of morbidity and mortality following bariatric surgery.[7-9]
