15.1 Advocating for LGBTQ Asylum-Seeking Populations in Underresourced Rural America

Worldwide LGBT youth face different levels of persecution. Unfortunately, treatment guidelines for transgender youth and their families are limited, and health care systems, particularly in rural areas, are not equipped to adequately provide care to this population. After participation in this Clinical Perspectives, participants will be able to do the following: 1) accurately cite the United Nations Treaty criteria, including protections against the torture of sexual minorities; 2) apply an understanding of LGBT persecution worldwide to the care of transgender and immigrant patients; and 3) begin the process of creating statewide asylum networks.
