7.1 Epidemiology of Substance Use Disorders Among Youth and Parents

Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to be aware of the prevalence of substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs) in adolescence, young adulthood, and pregnancy, and among parents to identify SUDs in the children and families they treat. Child and adolescent psychiatrists also need to understand the prevalence of engagement in SUD treatment across the lifespan. Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to understand demographic differences in substance use/SUD and engagement in SUD treatment.
