End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients experiencing kidney failure typically require hemodialysis in order to artificially remove fluid and waste from blood and maintain appropriate electrolyte concentrations. For many patients on hemodialysis, an a...

CONCLUSION: There is a high CKD burden in the ME countries. There needs to be emphasis on prevention of ESRD and provision of adequate care for the total ESRD patient population. National renal registries are needed to monitor the status of ESRD patients. Health expenditures should be increased to cover all aspects of RRT in ME Countries. Abstract End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) represents a major challenge for Latin America (LA). The Latin American Dialysis and Renal Transplantation Registry (LADRTR) has published several reports, and its continuity has implied a sustained effort of the nephrology community to improve care of ESKD in the region; this paper summarizes results of the year 2014. Methods have been reported previously; participant countries complete annual surveys collecting data on incident and prevalent patients undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT) in all modalities. 20 countries participated in the surveys (more than 90% of th...

Authors: Marmagkiolis K, Iliescu C, Edupuganti MMR, Saad M, Boudoulas KD, Gupta A, Lontos N, Cilingiroglu M Abstract OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of advanced stent technology in the management of failing arteriovenous grafts (AVGs). BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease rates and the need for hemodialysis are increasing worldwide. AVG remains a common dialysis access site. Several techniques have been previously suggested to restore and preserve AVG patency. A quantitative evaluation and synthesis of this information are essential in elucidating the role of newer stent platforms for the management of fail...

Authors: Wasse H, Alvarez AC, Brouwer-Maier D, Hull JE, Balamuthusamy S, Litchfield TF, Cooper RI, Rajan DK, Niyyar VD, Agarwal AK, Abreo K, Lok CE, Jennings WC Abstract End-stage kidney disease patients who are candidates for surgical arteriovenous fistula creation commonly experience obstacles to a functional surgical arteriovenous fistula, including protracted wait time for creation, poor maturation, and surgical arteriovenous fistula dysfunction that can result in significant patient morbidity. The recent approval of two endovascular devices designed to create a percutaneous arteriovenous fistula enables arteri...

HsiaoAbstractHemodialysis membranes are critical components for hemodialysis process. Herein, we demonstrate a new kind of hemodialysis membrane based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun scaffold and heparin-poly(vinyl alcohol) (heparin-PVA) hydrogel coating. Manipulation of coating solution rheology by control of heparin content enabled the creation of membranes with sub-micron ridged surface topography. The results of attenuated total reflec...
