Reproducibility of acquiring ultrasonographic infant hip images by the Graf method after an infant hip ultrasound training course

ConclusionsOur results demonstrated that inexperienced examiners could obtain ultrasonic infant hip joint images with minor differences and high reproducibility after the training course. Our findings raise the possibility of extending the infant hip ultrasound course in Japan.

Authors: Sun PO, Schyns MVP, Walbeehm ET Abstract Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequently operated neurological disorder of the hand. Incidence of patients remaining symptomatic has been reported up to 30% after primary release. Revision surgery remains challenging although multiple surgical options have been described. In this case series a simple novel technique, the palmaris longus interposition, is described for the treatment of recurrent and persistent CTS. Patients who underwent PLI between October 2013 and 2018 and without underlying neurological or hand disorders severely affecting the operated ...

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment is a promising non-invasive method for killing or destroying the diseased tissues by locally delivering thermal and mechanical energy without damaging surrounding normal tissues. In HIFU, measuring the temperature at the site of delivery is important for improving therapeutic efficacy, controlling safety, and appropriately planning a treatment. Several researchers have proposed photoacoustic thermometry for monitoring HIFU treatment, but they had many limitations, including the inability to image while the HIFU is on, inability to provide two-dimensional monitoring, and th...

Conclusion: The average shear moduli of the cortex and hippocampus were 3.84 and 2.33 kPa for the 4-month-old mice and 3.77 and 1.94 kPa for the 11-month-old mice, respectively. No statistical difference was observed in the cortex stiffness of mice of different ages. However, the hippocampus significantly softened with aging.

AbstractFocused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS) —a simplified, qualitative version of echocardiography—is a well-established tool in the armamentarium of critical care and emergency medicine. This review explores the extent to which FoCUS could also be used to enhance the preoperative physical examination to better utilise resources and ident ify those who would benefit most from detailed echocardiography prior to surgery. Among the range of pathologies that FoCUS can screen for, the conditions it provides the most utility in the preoperative setting are left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) and, in certain c...

ConclusionsAn inexpensive reusable non-commercial LP simulator can be an effective method for teaching invasive procedures like LPs, especially if it can be used both for palpation and US-guided procedures. The method outlined here can be easily reproduced in a relatively short amount of time. We recognize one limitation in the widespread dissemination of this technique being access to a 3D printer and digital designs for printing. Future studies will be necessary to determine the efficacy of the homemade LP simulator in teaching neurointensivist in training.
