nSymptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder: A Network Perspective
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are among the most prevalent disorders worldwide (Kessler, Berglund, et al., 2005), and investigators have documented their high rate of comorbidity (Beesdo et al., 2007; Brown et al., 2001; Kessler, Chiu et al., 2005; Ohayon& Schatzberg, 2010; Stein et al., 2001)1. Further, these disorders have been found to be associated with greater impairment when they co-occur than when either occurs alone (Norton et al., 2008). Despite these findings, however, we have only a limited understanding of the nature of the comorbidity of these disorders (Langer& Rodebaugh, 2014).
